The Advanced Fibre and Composites Cluster Geelong (AFCG) is proud to have played an integral role in supporting the refurbishment journey of Geelong’s iconic Baywalk Bollards, helping bring together the region’s expertise in materials science, engineering and advanced manufacturing.
Importantly, the replica is not made from traditional fibreglass; it has been manufactured using commercially available recycled composite material.
Paying homage to artist Jan Mitchell’s original Early Geelong Footballer, this replica bollard has now been unveiled along Geelong’s waterfront as part of the City of Greater Geelong’s Baywalk Bollard renewal project. The prototype demonstrates how regional collaboration and advanced manufacturing capabilities can help explore new ways to preserve the character of these much-loved cultural icons for future generations.
Collaboration and capability in Greater Geelong
Working alongside Sykes Advanced Manufacturing and local industry expertise, AFCG helped connect the capabilities needed to bring this prototype to life. The project draws on Geelong’s strengths in materials science, engineering, composites and advanced manufacturing, demonstrating the value of collaboration across the region’s innovation ecosystem.
The replica also reflects Geelong’s boat-building heritage, using composite manufacturing techniques to explore a more durable approach to renewing the bollards while respecting Jan Mitchell’s original artistic vision.
This work highlights the important role regional industry networks can play in connecting expertise, enabling practical innovation and supporting solutions to local challenges.
Have your say on the future of bollards
The City of Greater Geelong is now inviting community members and visitors to share their feedback on the prototype concepts. The consultation is an opportunity to contribute ideas and help shape the next stage of the renewal project.
You can view the concepts, share memories, photos and stories, and provide feedback through the City’s Have Your Say platform.
Community consultation closes Sunday 24 January.
The Baywalk Bollards are an enduring part of Geelong’s identity, celebrating the people, places and stories that make the region unique. Through collaboration and the application of local expertise, this project explores how their legacy can continue for generations to come.
AFCG is pleased to have helped connect the regional capabilities contributing to this important project and will continue to support collaboration across Geelong’s advanced fibre, composites and advanced manufacturing industries.
